Stormwater research roadmap and framework for priority needs for the next decade

Project overview

Researchers, practitioners, and agency and organizational leaders require a systematic and robust approach to identify knowledge gaps in stormwater management to help Minnesota best address research needs and direct resources efficiently and effectively. The goal of this component of the project is to develop an actionable stormwater research strategy or roadmap for the State for the next decade.

Research findings

The research team surveyed stormwater professionals and policy administrators across the state to get their opinions on the most pressing issues within stormwater research. Interviews were also conducted with five stormwater professionals to get a clearer understanding of the research needs that were expressed in the surveys, focus groups, and previous published studies. This project concluded that there were eight main research areas that needed to be emphasized within stormwater research:

  1. Improve characterization of urban stormwater and watersheds
  2. Evaluate the efficacy of stormwater management practices at the watershed scale
  3. Inform effective pollution reduction at the source
  4. Improve performance and reduce maintenance on structural BMPs
  5. Determine the cost efficiency of stormwater practices
  6. Develop new and innovative stormwater management practices
  7. Education to improve public perception of stormwater management and to improve effectiveness of citizens’ actions to improve water quality
  8. Improve stormwater stormwater management policies

What does this mean for Minnesota?

By having a better idea of where research needs to be done, researchers and professionals can have a more specific area to focus their efforts. These needs are what professionals consider to be the most relevant topics within stormwater, and learning more about them will allow researchers and practitioners to better manage and protect our waters.
