Watershed Innovations (WINS) Scholars Program

The Watershed Innovations (WINS) Scholars Program is a structured, 12-month cohort program for University of Minnesota (UMN) Twin Cities students seeking training and professional development that prepares them for careers in the water workforce. Administered by the Water Resources Center (WRC), the program leverages the WRC’s unique expertise in applied water research, extension, and long-standing connections with water practitioners.

Eligibility

The program annually selects an interdisciplinary cohort of UMN-Twin Cities students who meet the following criteria:

  • Advanced undergraduates who have completed at least four semesters of full-time coursework, or
  • Graduate students in a Masters or PhD program with at least one year remaining in their program.
  • All WINS Scholars must be enrolled in a University degree program and be in residence in Minnesota for the duration of the 12-month program (through October 2027).

Scholars are required to attend all monthly meetings, participate actively in field experiences/training, and demonstrate a commitment to supporting peers within their community of practice.

Benefits

To support their participation in the cohort, WINS Scholars will receive a $1,000 stipend.

WINS Scholars will:

  • Gain leadership training and career-readiness skills
  • Build their interdisciplinary network by joining a cohort of students from across the University
  • Connect with researchers, state and local government agencies, NGOs, and private engineering/consulting firms in the water sector
  • Learn about Minnesota’s critical water challenges, including stormwater management, wastewater treatment, safe drinking water, and the food-ag-water nexus
  • Access exclusive opportunities to compete for internal WINS professional development and research funding following cohort participation

Additionally, WINS Scholars will receive fully covered registration and attendance at the 2027 Minnesota Water Resources Conference, including dedicated early-career networking opportunities.
