Low Impact Development (LID) is a way of mimicking natural hydrologic processes when developing or modifying the land. This presentation will give an overview of some of the concepts of LID and briefly list some traditional urban practices. Then it will bring a deeper dive into actual pervious concrete pavement system applications from several different locations in the USA. However, LID can be applied in many other settings than urban. Concepts for applying LID to linear projects and some unique rural applications focusing on recent flooding in the Hill Country of Texas will be explored.
Dr. Liv Haselbach is a licensed professional engineer, a Fellow of ASCE and Board Certified in Environmental Engineering with the specialty of Environmental Sustainability by AAEES. Prior to her academic career she founded a land development consulting company in the northeast. She has a BS in Civil Engineering from Cornell with distinction, an MS in Chemical Engineering from UC Berkeley, and a PhD in Environmental Engineering from the University of Connecticut. She was an assistant professor at the University of South Carolina, an Associate and then Full Professor at Washington State University, an Associate Director of a USDOT Tier 1 University Transportation Center and a Fulbright-ALCOA Distinguished Chair in the Environmental Sciences and Engineering in Brazil. She was chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering from 2016 to 2022 and Executive Director of the Center for Resiliency at Lamar University from 2021 through 2024. She is currently a professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Lamar. Her research focuses on sustainable and low impact development, pervious concrete, environmental life cycle assessment and flooding communication.
