Les Everett's primary responsibility is the preparation and coordination of statewide Extension projects managed by the Water Resources Center that address agriculture and water quality. An additional responsibility is to coordinate with related organizations, such as FMMAC, CINRAM, and state and federal agencies. His current projects include:

  • EQIP Education. The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), provides cost-share and incentives to agricultural producers for implementing environmentally sound practices. Extension, in partnership with USDA-NRCS, provides education to producers and agricultural professionals on how to implement the practices.
  • Feedlot Rules Education. Information sessions were held for agency staff, agricultural professionals and farmers throughout the state about requirements under the new state feedlot rules. Special emphasis was placed on aspects of the rules related to land application of manure and manure management planning. The project continues with information on management of open lots as it relates to water quality. Funds are provided by USEPA as a Section 319 grant.
  • Small-Group Nutrient Management Plan Writing. Small groups of farmers are brought together to write nutrient management plans for representative fields of their own farms. Funds are provided by USEPA as a Section 319 grant.

Everett also participates in a U of M committee that is improving the environmental performance of University operations and facilitates the use of UM operations as a teaching tool. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in Plant Breeding, an M.S. from Cornell University in Agronomy, and a B. S. from Iowa State University in Farm Operation. He has been at the WRC since 1995. He is also on the academic staff of the Department of Soil, Water, and Climate.
