Assessment of Stormwater Best Management Practices
Sedimentation Practices
Sedimentation practices reduce runoff peak flow by temporarily storing runoff in a basin or constructed vessel while allowing solid pollutants to settle out and be retained by the practice. Assessment methods for sedimentation practices include visual inspection, capacity testing, synthetic runoff testing, and monitoring. For example, one method of capacity testing for sedimentation practices estimates the amount of solid pollutants that has been retained by the practice from a network of surface elevations within the stormwater BMP that are compared to design elevations. Results estimate the amount of solid pollutants retained in relation to the total solid retention capacity of the sedimentation practice to determine if, and possibly when, the practice needs maintenance or repair. The Assessment Protocol describes assessment methods for the following sedimentation practices:
-
Dry Ponds
-
Wet Ponds
-
Wet Vaults
-
Proprietary Devices
