Nutrients and Water Quality
Nutrients and pesticides introduced into our lakes and rivers through runoff can have serious impacts. Excess nitrate and phosphorus runoff from agricultural lands can cause eutrophication of lakes, producing mats of algae; excess nitrate transported by the Mississippi River contributes to hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico, a depletion of oxygen that keeps fish from flourishing. The WRC works with its many partners to discover and implement practices to reduce nutrients and contaminants in our waters.
