Crop Nutrient Planning and Manure Management

Nutrient Management Planner for Minnesota

The software program produces field-specific crop recommendations and nutrient management plans using past crop and nutrient application records, soil and manure test results, and other data. Nutrient calculations are based on U of M Extension published recommendations.

Grazing Management

Grazing System Planning Guide

University of Minnesota Extension Bulletin BU-07606, was developed by the EQIP education team. It was designed as a companion to the University of Wisconsin publication A3529 "Pastures for Profit". It is available through the UM Extension Service Distribution Center ( www.extension.umn.edu ), and was distributed through grazing workshops.  

Livestock Watering Systems Exhibit

This exhibit demonstrates alternative pumps and watering devices for use in managed grazing systems.

Fencing Methods and Materials Video

This video demonstrates fencing options for managed grazing. Wood, fiberglass, and metal posts as well as barbed wire and high tensile wire installations are shown. The economics and pros and cons of each system are discussed. This 18-minute video was funded by an EQIP Educational Grant to the Cottonwood Local Work Group, and was made in cooperation with the NRCS of Minnesota and Iowa. The video is available on loan from most Extension and SWCD/NRCS offices in Minnesota, and was distributed as part of the Beef Home Study Course of University of Minnesota Extension.

Managed Grazing Research and Demonstration Site

The site was established by the Clay County Local Work Group with an EQIP Education Local Education Grant. Experimental fencing, forage management of warm and cool season grasses, animal watering systems, and other elements of management are demonstrated at the site, and displayed annually at field days.

Management of Native Grasses in Pasture Demonstration Site

This demonstration site is being established by the Norman County Local Work Group with an EQIP Education Local Education Grant. Native grass establishment, livestock nutrition management, fencing, and water systems are demonstrated and displayed annually at field days.

Trees, Shrubs, and Native Grasses

Field Windbreak and Farmstead Shelterbelt Demonstration Site

This demonstration site was established by the Mower County Local Work Group as part of an EQIP Local Education Grant. Included at the same location are wildlife plantings, native grass cover, stream buffers, and wetland restorations. Yearly demonstrations are held at the site.

Fugle's Mill Demonstration Site

This site for native grass and woody plant species suitable for conservation and/or forage, was established by the Olmsted County Local Work Group. Development of the site is being assisted by an EQIP Local Education Grant. The site includes 70 species of trees and shrubs suitable for windbreaks, and 37 varieties of seven warm season grass species suitable for conservation plantings, wildlife, and grazing.

University of Minnesota Extension color brochure FO-7067 describes conservation practices which also benefit wildlife. Government and private organizations which offer technical and financial assistance for wildlife enhancement are listed, as well as other publications which address wildlife on farms.

Conservation on Small Acerages

A Guide for Rural Living

This guide summarizes conservation practices and resources for rural citizens of Mille Lacs, Pine, Carlton and Kanabec Counties. It was developed as part of an EQIP education grant to the Local Work Groups of the counties. It is available through UM Extension, Mille Lacs County at a cost.
