Barbara Liukkonen works primarily on shoreland education, volunteer monitoring, and safe drinking water. She also provides outreach education on wastewater, sourcewater protection, and land-use decision making. Liukkonen has a joint position with the WRC and Minnesota Sea Grant.
In addition to 20 years of experience with the Extension Service and Sea Grant, Liukkonen has also worked as the program director for the Rivers Council of Minnesota and as a hydrogeologist with the EPA. She has a M.S. from the University of Minnesota-Duluth in Hydrogeology, and B.A. in Geology from Carleton College.
She received the 2005 Dean and Directors' Distinguished Extension Faculty Award, the highest honor available to Extension faculty. Annually, one Extension campus-based faculty member and one field-based Extension educator. Selections are made by a committee from nominations by Extension colleagues.
